40 Lawnmowers

Harper, Texas - population: 204
Even though the ’80 census promised more
The town motto here is simply this: conform
You leave you own likes and dislikes at the door
You gotta do it their way or you don’t do it at all
What is this they say about pride and then a fall

Perfect little city where nobody ever goes
40 perfect houses all lined up in a row
(and there are)

40 lawnmowers mowing 40 lawns
40 families who don’t know what’s going on
and 40 little children who’ll go through their lives numb
still they wonder why nobody ever comes

You just keep on driving - you don’t wanna stop here
Everything that turns you off is something they hold dear
Convictions, morals, yeah, okay - but pure conformity
How low will the population go before they finally see

Perfect little city where nobody ever goes
20 perfect houses all lined up in a row
(and there are)

20 lawnmowers mowing 20 lawns
20 families who don’t know what’s going on
and 20 little children who’ll go through their lives numb
still they wonder why nobody ever comes

No one ever told these folks that different is good
No one ever taught them how to save their neighborhood
And so it’s gonna dwindle and they’re gonna wonder why
When all they ever had to really do was try

Zero lawnmowers, 40 ugly lawns
The 40 families who once lived here are gone
somewhere those children are just learning how to breathe
The best thing they could have ever done is leave
