This is the one record we've all felt really comfortable with and that's got to translate into something good..." - Adam Mullen Micah and the Mullenese grew up together, quite literally, as siblings in London. They say music was a big part of their lives growing up, but some embraced it more readily than others. It was the late 1970s when drummer Adam, bassist/vocalist Joe and guitarist/lead vocalist Micah began gigging around London pubs, under the name The Kickback Boys. "We had this little following of sorts," shares Adam. "And, of course, Saul got jealous!" After seeing the success his brothers were finding in the club scene, Saul called Micah, demanding to get in on this little "experiment" they had going. Only one problem - he didn't play a single instrument. "They tried to give me a tambourine," laughs Saul, "but I wanted something cooler." As a result, Micah spent a whole weekend teaching Saul the basics of keyboarding and the next time The Kickback Boys took the stage, Saul was right along side them. He describes his first stage experience as, "aweing. I had no idea how much fun it actually was. There were maybe three people at the gig that night, but they were three people that had come to see us! That was really cool." It wasn't long before the quartet came to the attention of Joel Gibson, who, ironically happened to be on vacation in London. "He came into the pub that night," Joe remembers, "and there we were. I guess we made a pretty good impression, because he approached Mike and said that he was starting a label..." "I thought he was so full of it!" Micah interrupts, with a laugh. "He came up and said all these pretty things and I was thinking that whole time, 'This bloke has to be drunk!' I never thought anyone would want to sign us, because that's not what we were in it for. We just wanted to have some fun and make some extra money." As it turned out, Mr. Gibson was indeed serious and the band soon began negotiations with the label. Around that time, they changed the name of their band from The Kickback Boys to Micah and the Mullenese. Six years, three albums and countless chart-topping singles later, the newly-christened "Mullenese" released 1987's Lullaby, considered by many to be their best record to date. Songs such as "Crucible for Silver" (on which Micah shares lead vocals with his daughter Jennafer), "Follow" and "See the Star" were instant chart toppers, but it was "Love Falls Down" that propelled the band into a whole new realm. "What's funny about that song is how little hope we actually had in it," laughs Micah, who had written the song years before and decided to put it on Lullaby to fill an extra slot. "It wasn't initially a favorite of ours. We never expected it to hit radio, or for anyone to really like it if it did, so the whole thing caught us off guard." The song's popularity not only cemented the band's place in the annals of rock and roll glory, it also introduced a whole new audience to the music of Micah and the Mullenese, crossing over onto Christian radio in the summer of 1988. Subsequently, the band recorded Find Me, an album strictly for the Christian market. Joe also seized the opportunity to record his solo debut, also exclusively for the Christian market, entitled Together Alone. "There was never any question about it," Adam insists. "It's actually something that we'd always wanted to do, so getting the offer was almost a dream come true." Having broken down barriers and made history with "Love Falls Down," Micah and the Mullenese are embarking on their sixth album, titled Awaken the Dawn. "The new record will be a pretty big step forward for us," predicts Joe. "It's more stripped down and more authentic than records past. This is probably the most 'real' record we've ever done." Saul agrees, joking, "If you liked Lullaby, you'll hate Awaken the Dawn!" "It's really about getting back to basics for us," Micah elaborates. "We're really excited about it, because it's something we really believe in." Expect Awaken the Dawn to hit the stores on October 4, 1990. |
